Disposable Mucus Extractor
A Disposable Mucus Extractor is a product that can be used to remove nasal mucus in newborn babies. This can be particularly important when a baby has an infection and if the mucus in the nose is not removed it can cause breathing problems and a loss of oxygen to the body.
There are several different mucus extractors available for this purpose but the best ones will offer anti-backflow technology which means that the air and the mucus will never come back together again. This makes it safe for your child to use and prevents any chance of them getting a nasal blockage or infection from the mucus in their nose.
The most well-known type of extractor is a simple one that has an inlet pipe and an outlet pipe which can be attached to a suction machine. The inlet pipe is inserted into the nose of the baby and the Midwife provides the suction to draw out the mucus.
But if too much suction is provided it can irritate the nasal passage and can cause further irritation or even a blockage. It can also cause the Midwife to ingest some of the mucus which could be dangerous if there is any contagious disease present.
To ensure the safety of this process a valve is provided to control the amount of pressure that is generated in the extractor. The valve is made from plastics which are inexpensive and easily molded to provide the desired negative pressure.
In order to achieve this the extractor is designed with a valve that opens when the thumb 20 of the user applies pressure to a bulb 18 which expands and contracts in a controlled manner thereby producing a negative pressure. The pressure is then withdrawn and bulb 18 relaxes allowing air to be expelled from chamber 16 via valve 24.
It is also possible to provide the extractor with a valve that will automatically open when the thumb 20 of the user releases pressure from the bulb 18. This is especially useful if there is an inability to control the force with the thumb, or if it is difficult to control the amount of air that is expelled through the tube 14.
Another invention provides a method for the extraction of mucus from the nose of a baby. The invention includes a first chamber 12 and a second chamber of 16. In operation, the far end 13 of tube 14 is placed in the nasal passage of the baby with the bulb 18 being compressed by the thumb 20 of an operator (not shown) to form the concertina bulb arrangement. When the bulb 18 is released it returns to its normal shape and valve 24 closes thereby sealing upper chamber 16. This results in a negative pressure being generated in the lower chamber 12 which can be utilized to suction mucus along tube 14.
A simple oral suction extractor can be readily improvised from an intravenous drip set with only the proximal portion containing a rigid plastic bottle-piercing needle for sucking the mucus out of the neonate's mouth. This is a cheap, sterile and disposable oral mucus extractor that is highly effective in situations where other methods of removing the mucus from the nose cannot be used.
